Maddie, a 32-year old woman working as an Uber driver and bartender in Montauk, New York, is facing bankruptcy after her car is repossessed trying to pay property taxes on a home she inherited from her dead mother. Desperate to avoid losing the home, she accepts an unusual Craigslist posting in which her new employers, a pair of helicopter parents, ask to "date" their 19-year-old son Percy in exchange for a Buick Regal. Percy shows no interest in girls, drinking, or sex, and his parents hope to get him out of his shell before he attends Princeton University in the fall.
Maddie attempts to seduce Percy at the animal shelter he volunteers at, but after offering him a ride home, he mistakenly thinks that she's attempting to kidnap him and maces her. Despite this, they agree to go on a date the following day. Maddie and Percy visit a beach at the night, where they skinny dip, only for a group of rowdy teenagers to steal their clothes — Maddie fights them in the nude, scaring Percy, who demands to be taken home. Maddie leaves without him and he jumps on her car, naked, as they outrun the police. Maddie and Percy attempt to have sex, but Percy gets rashes from anxiety, so Maddie treats him.

Maddie and Percy continue to date, sharing more about each other and growing closer. Both reveal that they never went to prom, so they imitate a prom night and go to fancy dinner. There, Percy meets a school acquaintance who invites him to a party. After Percy and Maddie have a fight about their long-term plans, he goes to the party while Maddie searches for him, finding him after he took an ibuprofen with alcohol. Percy admits that he loves Maddie.
Percy inadvertently learns about Maddie's arrangement with his parents. After inviting her to lunch with his parents, he smashes her car into a tree, they attempt to have sex, and then he ends their relationship. Maddie takes the smashed car and uses it to pay off her debts, and then decides to sell the house to Jim and Sarah and move to California. She reunites with Percy at a Princeton mixer, where they promise to stay friends.
Later, Maddie drives Percy to Princeton to move in, while she herself is on the way to California, and reveals that she adopted Milo, a former police dog addicted to cocaine who lived at the shelter Percy volunteered at.
